CALCIUM: How it is vital for human health

Updated: Nov 18, 2022

What is Calcium?

Calcium is one of the minerals most often associated with healthy bones and teeth. However, it also plays a vital role in blood clotting, helping in muscle contraction, and regulating normal heart rhythms and nerve functions. Almost 99% of the body’s calcium is stored in bones, and the remaining is found in blood, muscle, and other tissues.

The body works constantly to keep a steady amount of calcium in the blood and tissues in order to perform these vital daily functions. If these levels drop too low in the blood, parathyroid hormone (PTH) will signal the bones to release calcium into the bloodstream. This hormone may probably activate vitamin D as well to improve the absorption of calcium in the intestines. At the same time, the kidneys are signaled to release less calcium in the urine. When the body has enough calcium, a different hormone called calcitonin becomes active to do the opposite: it reduces calcium levels in the blood by stopping the release of calcium from bones and signaling the kidneys to get rid of excess calcium in the urine.

The body gets required calcium in two ways:

1. By eating foods or supplements that contain calcium.

2. By drawing calcium from the body.

If one does not eat enough calcium-containing foods, the body will remove calcium from bones. Ideally, the calcium that is “borrowed” from the bones will be replaced at a later point. But this doesn’t always happen, and can’t always be accomplished just by eating more calcium.
